For its part, Nagkaisa said they are filing the motion to intervene as they have already exhausted remedies by sending letters to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and Finance Secretary Ralph Recto. The group emphasized that PhilHealth should not divert its funds and should be appropriated for its intended use – to improve healthcare services for the medical needs of workers. “This action diverts resources away from those who are most in need, favoring loosely structured, flexible, and unprogrammed projects that are typically susceptible to corruption,” Nagkaisa said. Nagkaisa cited in its petition the decision of the Supreme Court in Ople vs. Torres and emphasized that it is the court’s duty to prioritize public interest and avoid procedural technicalities when issues of paramount importance are at stake. “A timely intervention by the highest court is not only necessary but imperative to prevent further misuse and to ensure that these funds serve their intended purpose,” Nagkaisa said.
